Befriending Mercury

Mercury. The planet of communication, ideas, and messages. It is the one planet we all tend to blame our problems on whenever it goes retrograde, and it fills our minds with ideas. Mercury processes information we receive, whether by sight, sound, or even taste. Its energy is dexterous, nimble, and moves with a haste many of us associate with nervous energy. Ruler of both Gemini and Virgo, neither masculine nor feminine, and purveyor of mischief.

As the closest planet to the Sun, Mercury moves the quickest through each sign (besides the Moon, of course). Mercury in myth is the Roman god as well as associated with the Greek god Hermes. He flies through the air on winged boots, delivering messages between the realms and gods, crossing boundaries, and working as a psychopomp to the underworld.

The idea of making friends with a planet may seem confusing, but it’s a matter of utilizing our natal astrology to see where energy is needed and then learning about our unique astrological makeup. Befriending Mercury is a task many of us can benefit from because of its influence on our daily lives. By working with Mercury, we seek to gain its nimble dexterity and agile intellect. The best way to befriend the planet depends on where it may live in your natal chart. How it manifests in one’s life can fluctuate on the sign or house it resides as well as it’s interaction with any other planets. With Mercury currently retrograde in it’s detriment (Sagittarius), I thought it would be helpful to share some of my thoughts on how to befriend Mercury.

Mercury in the Signs

Mercury throughout the signs greatly affects how we feel its power and influence. Spending time working with Mercury requires patience because of how quickly it moves through a sign. We all experience Mercury differently because of our unique natal charts and your individual astrology determines how Mercury’s influence manifests in your life. There are many considerations for how to befriend Mercury including essential dignities (domicile and detriment in this case), chart rulers, aspects and more. I’ll be primarily exploring essential dignities and planetary rulers in this post when I go through each astrological sign.

Mercury in Virgo

What better sign to start off with than Mercury’s domicile?

Virgo’s strength is in the details. They are attentive and take care of others in ways many signs cannot. Their flexibility allows them to adapt and observe to maintain balance and harmony. Being ruled by Mercury, Virgo’s communication and work ethic gives them great skills in self-improvement and understanding. Mercury in Virgo is a powerful placement. While Virgos have many skills and traits associated with Mercury, individuals with this placement can utilize those skills better than most. There is a precision and attentiveness for Mercury in Virgo that can easily overcome barriers.

Befriending Mercury in Virgo can take skill, especially considering the mutability of this placement. Virgo adds ease to befriending the placement because of it being Mercury’s domicile, so clarity comes easily here. One may be able to navigate Mercurial themes better with Mercury in Virgo than other placements, but this attunement can lead to more sensitivity to the shifts in Mercury’s energy. Someone with Mercury in Virgo may also struggle with perfectionism or being critical of others. Embodying the strengths and skills of Mercury while focusing on releasing the negative energy associated with Virgo can be a helpful focus for befriending this placement. Shifting the critical eye into attentiveness increases empathy and care for others. Spending time with Mercury in Virgo can increase our skills in navigating Mercurial energy and benefit our lives going forward.

Mercury in Libra

Libra focuses on bringing people together, finding balance and understanding, and using logic to find the best solution. Libras are naturally social and make great leaders with their ability to understand multiple perspectives and logically filter through ideas. Ruled by Venus, there’s a natural charm to Libra placements and they make great peacekeepers with their strong sense of justice. Mercury in Libra offers great strengths and skills by combining the powers of Mercury and Venus together.

Befriending Mercury in Libra requires strong knowledge of the strengths and weakness of Libra. Libra’s diplomacy and pleasantry can be beneficial to a Mercury placement, especially for conflict resolution. There’s also great aesthetic strength within Libra, so having befriending Mercury in this placement would be beneficial for creative writings like poetry or making art. Libra can be indecisive at times because of being a peacemaker and wanting to understand all perspectives, so trusting one’s own intuition is important when making friends with Mercury in Libra.

Mercury in Scorpio

Scorpio can add some interesting distinctions to Mercury. Mercury is a nimble placement which might feel very different from Scorpio’s energy. Being a fixed water sign, Scorpio is much more intentional, slow-moving, and direct. Scorpios are often coined as mysterious because they don’t automatically share personal details and tend to be more private. There’s a sense of loyalty in Scorpio, especially being ruled by Mars. Transformation and change are friends of Scorpio which tends to show itself when Mercury is in this sign.

Mercury in Scorpio is a placement focused on truth and directness. Deep conversations are common for this placement. Befriending Mercury in Scorpio looks like facing the truth and addressing the root of the problem, and there is an ease to peeling away the layers with Scorpio which this shines through well in Mercury. Working with this placement should include honing in on details, finding the truth of what one wants, and not letting others get in the way. Scorpio is an intuitive sign and using this in combination with Mercury can be a great way to befriend this placement. Another way of befriending Mercury in Scorpio is by letting go of pessimistic thought patterns and trying to focus on positive surrounding energies.

Mercury in Sagittarius

Sagittarius adds a layer of chaos to Mercury. There is a sense of quickness and bluntness associated with Sagittarius because of the way this sign tends to act like a wildfire compared to other fire signs. Virgo has a similar quickness to Sagittarius, but they do not have as much grace. This is instead replaced by commitment and drive. Despite the chaotic nature, Sagittarians tend to act as teachers or mentors, providing guidance and truth to those who need it. This shows deeply in them because they are ruled by Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth. Mercury is in its detriment in Sagittarius meaning the planet has less support and tools for success, but that does not mean there aren’t strengths to be gained from befriending this placement.

Mercury in Sagittarius is a scholarly placement. These individuals love to learn and expand their knowledge, but it may come in unconventional ways. The thought patterns and processes are going to be different from most people’s, so befriending this placement can look like carving a new path forward. Sagittarius Mercury individuals will find inspiration and knowledge in the world around them. Rather than banging one’s head against a wall trying to learn someone else’s methods, break it down and transform it into something new. Befriending Mercury in Sagittarius can also mean slowing down and being thoughtful in how one communicates. Individuals with this placement may tend to be loud and preachy at times, so focusing on listening to others can bring great benefits to this placement.

Mercury in Capricorn

Capricorn is a sign all about business. They are hard workers, dedicated to their craft and finding success. This placement indicates thoughtful communication and care in the way one speaks. There is a concision and directness in their methods not too dissimilar from Scorpio. Structure is an important aspect to this placement as Capricorns are organized individuals. This applies especially as Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn. Mercury in Capricorn is a placement about getting things done, whether it be learning a new hobby, writing an essay, or balancing workloads between two jobs.

Finding structure and applying it to the Mercurial aspects of life is a great way to befriend Mercury in Capricorn. A large hurdle to get over with this placement will be trusting others and staying open minded. Capricorn placements can be focused on their own plans and may struggle with changing their ideas, so remaining open to new perspectives can be helpful here. Learning how to rest is also important for Capricorn placements because they are quick to conquer the next mountain. Taking time to be thoughtful in planning and preparing rather than moving quickly to the next task can help with befriending this placement.

Mercury in Aquarius

Aquarius is a unique sign with unique characteristics when considered with Mercury. A sign focused on change and new ideas will bring it to the forefront in this placement. As a fixed air sign, Aquarius has an energy of original thoughts that may push the boundaries of what we expect. There is a focus on logic and detachment when considering bold new ideas with Mercury in Aquarius. Other air sign Mercury placements may be focused on others, whereas Aquarius can be more rebellious and impersonal. Being ruled by Saturn, they are the other side of the coin in comparison to Capricorn. Where Capricorn is structured and business-focused, Aquarius will tear it all down to create something new from the rubble.

Befriending Mercury in Aquarius can be an interesting task because of the otherworldly-ness of Aquarius. Embracing the unique thought processes and not trying to fit into boxes created by others is a great start to befriend this placement. Use the innovative thinking to invoke change within others. Individuals with this placement should look inward and use those same thoughts to improve themselves. While revolution can be a focus, make sure to move forward with empathy and love. The detachment that comes easily to Aquarius can be a downfall here, so leading with love will help create the best relationship to Mercury in this placement.

Mercury in Pisces

Pisces is the epitome of flowing water, moving like a river of dreams. The mutability of Pisces shines through with Mercury. Self-expression is a strong focus for Pisces which shows through communication and creativity in Mercury. Intuition is a skill for folks with this placement which tends to be a higher focus than logic. As a mutable water sign, imaginations run wild here. Mercury in Pisces is a placement that encourages one to remain in their subconscious dream space, especially with how Mercury is a planet that lives in our minds. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter which further encourages this individual to dream big and be creative. Artistry is important for this placement as a way of channeling energy and emotion.

Finding ways to channel the subconscious to remain grounded is going to be the perfect start to befriending Mercury in Pisces. While Mercury is a planet focused on reason and logic, Pisces can create unique pathways to solutions and be creative thinkers. Following intuition and trusting oneself can also benefit people with this placement. There needs to be a focus on remaining in reality, though. Maintaining realistic outlooks in combination with the dreamy intuition can lead to strong creativity and magic. Mental health may be a struggle here as well because of how Mercury rules the mind. Mercury is in detriment in Pisces, so there needs to be a heightened awareness of Mercurial themes in one’s life here. The potential outcome of artistry and creativity is unmatched to other Mercury placements.

Mercury in Aries

The Mars-ruled sign of Aries adds a lovely fire to Mercury placements. Aries’ energy strengthens the quick-thinking and movement of Mercury and amplifies it to a new level. As a cardinal fire sign, Aries has the drive and passion to follow dreams and get shit done. They are likely to have lots of energy in the way they communicate. Individuals with this placement may experience Mercury as more of an embodied experience rather than in the mind. Mercury in Aries can lead to quick decision making and directness. Sharing the Mars rulership with Scorpio, there is a similar sense of loyalty here that may manifest more as the raging parent within Aries rather than the slow moving intentional energy of Scorpio.

Befriending Mercury in Aries should start by slowing down. The powerful fire energy of Aries can be chaotic and hectic, especially in a Mercurial sense. The quick thinking and headstrong patterns of Aries may lead to issues, so intentionally slowing down to be more methodical is great for befriending this placement. While this energy can cause sensitivity within oneself, channeling it in other ways can lead to great successes. Mercury in Aries is a wonderful placement for furthering one’s career, having initiative to start new ideas, and becoming a strong leader. Bluntness is a something to be careful of, though, when considering this placement. Maintain thoughtfulness and this placement can lead to great successes.

Mercury in Taurus

Taurus is all about slow and steady movement, especially as the fixed earth sign of the zodiac. The Venus rulership of Taurus emphasizes earthly themes like money and material items. Taurus is typically represented as a bull because of how these individuals can be stubborn, but there is a sense of dedication and conviction in this too. Having this energy with Mercury can lead to someone who is very thoughtful with their communication style. As the sister sign to Scorpio, Taurus can also be very direct in how they think and speak. While individuals with Mercury in Taurus may take time to reach a decision or idea, they are dedicated to it once it comes.

The focus for befriending Mercury in Taurus should be in adjusting to the fixed earth energy. Remaining open to new ideas while decision making can be helpful in this context. Taurus Mercury’s direct communication style may be strong and off-putting at times, so using a softer tone and the slowness of Taurus to one’s advantage may prove useful. Accepting the slowness of Mercury in Taurus can be a useful tool as well. The world wants us to rush and move quickly, but focusing on the speed of Mercury in Taurus can help individuals with this placement find success.

Mercury in Gemini

Gemini is the second domicile for Mercury, which is the only planet without exaltation nor fall, so instead it has two domiciles and detriments. Gemini is the flip-side of the Virgo coin. Being a mutable air sign, Mercury manifests very differently in Gemini than it does in Virgo. This placement focuses on mental processing and flexibility. Mercury in Virgo has more of a focus on productivity and intentionality, whereas with Gemini it is more about creative thinking. Words are at an all time high here, especially in forms of lyrics, writing, poetry, and more. These individuals are quick with facts and random thoughts and they love logic puzzles.

While there is a lot of goofiness and skill to Mercury’s domicile in Gemini, there can be struggles as well. Maintaining focus and thorough thoughts should be a strong focus for befriending Mercury in Gemini. There is a wide breadth to the knowledge of this placement, but finding depth within it can be difficult. Mercury in Gemini uses logic first, so leading with empathy can deepen one’s skills and build a better relationship with this placement. Using the communication skills of Mercury in Gemini as a strength will be useful here, especially when focusing on empathy. Individuals with Mercury in Gemini are quick thinkers and decision makers, so slowing down can be helpful when befriending this placement.

Mercury in Cancer

Moon-ruled Cancer adds an emotional depth to Mercury. With a connection to the Moon, it makes it easy for these individuals to have deep conversations. There is an intensity added to communication and embracing emotions comes easily here. Cancer is a nurturing, sensitive sign and this shows in this Mercury placement. Individuals with Mercury in Cancer are unlikely to have many similarities to others with the same placement due to the variance of the Moon in a natal chart. The Moon travels faster than any other planet and so it’s unlikely for two people to have the same Moon placement, and this greatly affects the rulership of Mercury in Cancer.

Mercury in Cancer can be difficult to befriend due to the connection of the Moon. The shifting energy can be difficult to nail down, and the sensitivity of this placement may lead to struggles. Individuals with this placement may feel guarded and take things personally, so building trust with oneself and others is a great starting point to befriending this placement. Being cautious of mood changes and emotional shifts is also useful for befriending Mercury in Cancer. These individuals have a tendency to avoid conflict as well, so working on dealing with conflict can lead to greater success here.

Mercury in Leo

Leo is the other side of the luminary-ruled signs. Being ruled by the Sun, Leos have lots of strength and energy in their presence. There is a magnetism to Leo due to their solar nature, and this applies directly to Mercury. Individuals with Mercury in Leo speak with authority and sincerity. This is a placement meant to give speeches and motivate others. These individuals are focused on the big picture rather than the small details and they are skilled in delivering their message. The cardinal fire energy of Leo pushes this placement to lead while also maintaining a playfulness.

It is important to stay grounded with this placement. Not unlike the other fire signs, Mercury in Leo is quick to defensiveness and can become emotional when people disagree with them. Listening to others and leading with care is helpful for befriending Mercury in Leo. Maintaining authenticity with others can lead to better relationships with others and successful communication here. Use the leadership skills from Mercury in Leo to uplift others. Pride can be an issue for Leo placements, so being humble and caring for others can help befriend Mercury in Leo.
